The trade-offs of online, in-person and hybrid clubs — and how to pick the right model.

Should your club meet in a room, on a screen, or both? Each format makes different things easy and different things hard.

When in-person wins

Activity clubs — running, chess, crafts, board games — depend on shared physical space. In-person meetings also create stronger accountability: people are less likely to skip when they know faces will notice.

When online wins

Highly specific interests (a particular author, a rare hobby) rarely have enough local enthusiasts. Online clubs let you gather them from anywhere and suit carers, shift workers and people in rural areas.

Making hybrid work

  • Run a fixed monthly in-person meetup plus an always-on online space.
  • Appoint a host for online attendees during hybrid sessions.
  • Share recaps everywhere so no one feels second-class.
  • Use a single member list across formats.

Our verdict

Start with the format your activity demands. Add the other format once you have a stable core of at least 10–15 regulars — that's when hybrid boosts growth instead of splitting a fragile group.
